Jura Range Reviews: ENA vs A Range Jura’s – For The Home User

Understanding coffee machine names and ranges can be difficult enough as it is, especially for a first time buyer or renter. Buying or renting the wrong coffee machine can spell disaster and cause mountains of unnecessary stress for the end user.

A machine might look perfect (and let’s face it – they all do – especially Jura’s) – but knowing the difference between a GIGA and an ENA range can be the deciding factor between years of contentment and pleasure and years of stress and a machine that doesn’t meet your needs.

Jura ENA Range

The Jura ENA range includes the following machines:

  • ENA Micro 1
  • ENA 5
  • ENA Micro 9
  • ENA Micro 90
  • Jura ENA 3
  • Jura ENA 7

The machines, while all very similar, have differentiating factors. They are all made for the home user – based solely off their size and output capacity. Their water tanks are usually in the 1 – 2 litre ranges, with bean hoppers sized between 110g – 230g.

This is well suited to a home user because those two factors allow for between one and four users to get the best out of their machine, without having to constantly refill empty hoppers and perform heaps of maintenance throughout the day.

They are also relatively easy to use, with minimal displays and slightly less “fancy” operations. This is one of the biggest factors in being able to sell these machines at an entry level price, while still offering the Jura stamp of quality.

So, what’s the downfall?

Apart from my previous mentioning of “less fancy” operations – you’re likely to forfeit the aesthetic you might have come to expect from Jura. The interface is basic – that it uses basic graphics to denote drink options and cup sizes. There are no LED touch-screens, and the machine seems small in stature. However, if you’re someone who does not care for the looks of the machine, but focus more on the coffee it produces – then this machine range was made for you.

Milk-based drinks are not a priority for the ENA range; with the exception of a few, the Jura ENA range usually consists of a single or double spout out of which you can make superb coffee’s and Espresso’s.

All Jura machines have state-of-the-art grinders, which ensures the quickest possible grinding and extraction for each and every cup. So while you may consider it a downfall that the ENA range doesn’t have the bells and whistles of higher models, you can rest assured you’re still going to get a damn good cuppa from it.

If you’re a lover of milk-based drinks, the following machines from the ENA range are all fitted with the Fine-Foam Frother wand:

Jura ENA 7 – R 15 000.00

Jura ENA 3 – If you manage to find one locally, the price range is expected to be similar to that of the ENA 7.

ENA Micro 90 – R 15 000.00

ENA 5 – R 10 000.00

While the rest of the Jura ENA range is limited to making “black” coffee, this is something a coffee purist might want to look at.

In summary, the ENA range does have options for lovers of latte’s and cappuccino’s, but if you’re very specific about milk quality – remember that these machines are fitted with the “entry-level” Fine Foam Frothers – whereas the higher-end Jura ranges come with {Professional Fine Foam Frothers. However, if you can’t be bothered with the difference in texture of micro-foam vs regular foam, don’t let this bother you.

Jura A Range

The Jura A range is the newest addition to South African Jura offerings. This is, for the time being, limited to the Jura A1.

This machine is undoubtedly geared for the coffee purist – it does not have any milk-frothing capabilities but it is fitted with the newest and most advanced grinder systems – i.e. – The Aroma G3 Grinder. This grinder is optimised to grind your coffee in the shortest amount of time, to your selected grind size (allowing for a heavier or lighter coffee extraction for each cup) and to dispense that beautiful brew into your cup in the shortest amount of time.

Another nifty feature the A1 boasts is the I.P.B.W.S. This is not the “top technology” of P.E.P, but yo can be assured that your pre-infused coffee grounds have maximum flavour extracted for each cup. Has the lingo got you confused? Check out this post on Jura’s Key Technologies to understand more.

If you’re keen to buy a Jura A1, you can expect to pay in the region of R 10 000.00. If this machine has stolen your heart, but you’re torn up that it cannot froth milk – don’t stress! You can still buy a free-standing Jura Milk Frother for as little as R 1 000.00.

We’ve compared the ENA and A range of coffee machine side by side, as these two ranges are most closely comparable to one another in terms of their size, output, aesthetic and suitability to home users who love great coffee.

If you love exceptional quality coffee in the comfort of your cozy home, are not concerned about dazzling aesthetics and want value for money – consider these two ranges.

Cafflano Klassic Coffee Maker Review

The Cafflano Klassic Coffee Maker is a 4-piece, single serve bean to cup coffee making device that ensures the freshest cup of coffee imaginable – almost anywhere!

I have refrained from calling it a coffee machine: The Cafflano Klassic is a single, free-standing portable device – the total opposite to what we have come to know as a coffee machine, which is typically plugged in to a power source and mostly immovable.

Cafflano Klassic – Components

This on-the-go coffee maker is as ingenious as it is compact and convenient. The machine looks like a basic travel mug from the outside, but upon closer inspection, we see it comprises of four major components:

  • A Drip Kettle
  • Hand Mill-Grinder
  • Filter Dripper
  • Tumbler / Cup

How Does The Cafflano Klassic Coffee Maker Work?

Apart from boiling water and coffee beans – this device means you’re ready to make coffee almost anywhere, at any time.

Using the Filter Dripper (already fitted) and the Hand Mill-Grinder, grind approximately 20g of whole coffee beans directly into your filter area. The device is designed to reduce and almost entirely remove the “bounce’ you would normally associate with a free-standing grinder, making the experience even more streamlined and convenient. Grinding your beans should take you about one minute, and this is probably the most labour-intensive part of the entire process.

Once your beans are ground, remove the Hand Mill-Grinder completely to reveal the Filter Dripper.

Fill your Drip Kettle to the brim with piping hot water; pour approximately 1/5 of the amount of water over your grounds (ensure the ground coffee is completely covered) and allow this to pre-infuse for 45 seconds. Take note – if you (like me) enjoy piping hot coffee, pop the tumbler/ cup over the top of the Filter Opening to avoid any hot air escaping during this pre-infusion process.

Once you have pre-infused your ground coffee, slowly pour-over the remaining water from the Drip Kettle until your filter is filled to the top.

Allow your coffee to brew itself – try aim for 1 – 3 minutes; after the 3 minute mark, you’re going to start extracting the extreme bitterness associated with over-extracted coffee.

Remove your Filter Dripper completely, sit back and enjoy your freshly brewed cup of filter coffee!

Who Should Buy The Cafflano Klassic?

Off the bat – be sure to know that this type of coffee solution is NOT going to be the right path to take for everyone.

Let’s get this out the way – whop is the Cafflano Klassic NOT a good fit for?

– Someone who wants to press a button and have all the “hard” work done for them.

– If you enjoy creamy, milk-based drinks, please don’t use this. You are limited to brewing only filter coffee from this type of device.

– Someone who will be making coffee for more than one person (i.e. – themselves) – throughout the day.

But then – who is the Cafflano Klassic a good fit for?

– If you find yourself camping or travelling long distances often, and cannot find good coffee the majority of the time – this nifty little device could be the answer to all your problems.

– If you enjoy the preparation of coffee as much as you enjoy the end product, you’ll love the convenient but hands-on features the Cafflano Klassic Offers.

Cafflano Klassic vs Capsule vs Filter Coffee Machines

To compare apples with (smaller) apples, weigh up your options between three three types of coffee machine that will yield the same results:

Preparation Time

– Cafflano Klassic – 3 – 5 minutes per cup

– Capsule Machines – 1 – 3 minutes per cup

– Filter Coffee Machine – Batch brewing means up to 12 cups can bee brewed in 6 minutes – i.e. – 30 seconds per cup

Output Capacity

– Cafflano Klassic – One cup (250ml) per preparation

– Capsule Machines – One cup per preparation

– Filter Coffee Machine – Up to 12 cups per preparation

Output Quality

– Cafflano Klassic – Limited to filter coffee – although quality is immense as freshly ground beans are used.

– Capsule Machines – Less freshness due to pre-packaged capsules, however, greater variety.

– Filter Coffee Machine – Limited to filter coffee, which can be bought pre-packaged or ground freshly, on-the-spot with a separate coffee bean grinder.

Eco-Friendliness

– Cafflano Klassic – No by-products; only coffee grounds, which contain nitrate. The can be added to top soil to assist plant growth.

– Capsule Machines – coffee capsules which are not properly recycled end up in land fills and are already having a huge environmental impact.

– Filter Coffee Machine – Filter paper is usually biodegradable, and ground coffee can be used as outlined in the Cafflano eco-friendliness indicator.

Coffee Type Limitations

– Cafflano Klassic – Limited to filter coffee.

– Capsule Machines – Varieties can include Chai Tea’s, powdered milk capsules and varied coffee strengths per capsule.

– Filter Coffee Machine – Limited to filter coffee.

In Conclusion

If you’ve ever enjoyed things like the AeroPress and the novelty of brewing your own cup of coffee from start to end, this could be a wise investment for you. You’re guaranteed fresh, quality coffee in a few minutes with very little maintenance or cleaning up.

Brewing in batches is never, ever going to work when using this as your “machine” of choice. You’ll wear it out and almost certainly never be satisfied with how much coffee it can brew.

For variety – look elsewhere. Simple.

But for the freshest ground coffee delivered straight to your mug, anywhere at any time – this is the tool for you!

Smeg Coffee Machines – Is It The Right Solution For You?

It’s safe to say that each and every one of these machines is aesthetically mind-blowing. These pieces are going to attract attention (of the right kind) and will impress even the fussiest of guests.

There are, however, a few more considerations before “plunging” into a R 30 000.00 investment piece.

Firstly, look at the capacity of the machines housings. Each of these machines are limited to a 1.8 litre water tank (exceptionally small if you have anywhere in excess of 10 people using the machine daily) and a 220g bean hopper (also on the small side). So, while they offer a breathtaking aesthetic, they don’t truly cater for high usage environments.

That being said, they do offer exceptional quality coffee. They have attachable milk frothers, which are a great convenience in a busy office, touch-screen displays, energy saving benefits, self-cleaning circuits, adjustable coffee spouts and also an override doser for pre-ground coffee.

There are both pro’s and con’s of these machines, but it’s safe to say that if you’re on the lookout for an incredible talking piece that makes as much of an impression as it does a great cup of coffee, then go right for this!

Coffee, Tea and Hot Water Machines: Keeping Winter Woes at Bay with a Multi-purpose Coffee Machine

Waking up is getting steadily more difficult, the days are shorter and the night comes quickly. Unfortunately, we’re not bears and we cannot take to our caves for three month’s out of the year to hibernate and forget how freezing it is out there.

The next best bet is to layer up, put the heaters (or, if you’re lucky, set the fireplace roaring) – and make yourself a deliciously hot cup of… well, that differs from person to person. A hot cup of tea might do the trick for you, but the next person might want to cry at the idea of that.

Now if you’re in an office environment, you’ve hopefully got some sort of device that allows you to make yourself hot drinks through the day; maybe a tea lady who does her rounds scrupulously and either a) gets your drink just the way you like it or b) simply can’t wrap his or her head around the fact you like more than one scoop of coffee or sugar in your cup.

See the problem? A grouchy Winter-hater, trying their best to make it through another sub-zero day, and his or her hot cuppa just ain’t right.

Coffee, Tea and Hot Water Machines for the Office

As we said, not everyone has the same taste. Even those who classify themselves as coffee lovers all have their own unique tastes – some prefer strong coffee while others enjoy a hint of coffee in their latte’s.

It seems impossible to have one machine that can satisfy everyone’s needs – unless you go back to bare basics or having an urn with supplies laid out for the office. This comes with it’;s own set of disadvantages – like theft, misuse, overuse and wastage.

I’m sure we’ve all seen an office with a coffee vending machine or some sort of automatic coffee machine. These can be configured to dispense exactly what you need! Yes, the vending machine is more easily configured, but let’s discuss both:

Automatic Coffee Machines for Coffee, Tea and Hot Water

This is definitely the higher-end solution; the primary function of the automatic coffee machine (by this I mean a machine that grinds whole coffee beans and produces frothed milk) is to make great tasting, quality coffee.

An easy way around this hiccup is to make use of the hot water spout, usually located nearby the dispensing spout.

It’s quite simple: If you want coffee, you make the coffee as per the machine instructions. If you want tea, you pop a teabag into your cup and fill it up with hot water from the free-standing water spout. According to taste, add a sugar sachet and maybe some steamed milk.

To make soup, follow the exact same process as with tea, but pop your soup sachet in first.

Vending Coffee Machines for Coffee, Tea and Hot Water (AND Hot Chocolate)

Coffee vending machines are designed with the main focus to be convenience and control; convenient in the fact you can dispense (almost) any drink by touching a labelled button, and control in that all your product is safely behind a locked door – meaning no incidences of theft or overuse are headed your way.

Vending machines for coffee are designed to dispense any drink a typical office would desire:

Black coffee, Espresso, Cappuccino (using powdered milk though), Hot chocolate, Hot water, Hot water with milk, Hot water with sugar, and hot water with milk and sugar.

That will surely satisfy every need of every person in your office, and will likely save you some money in the upcoming months of Winter.

While it’s not common, and also not readily recommended, some machines can be configured to dispense soup. The reason this is not usually a recommendation is that the mixing bowls might become contaminated with the soup powder. And who wants “Spicy Tomato” flavoured hot chocolate? Yugh.

The best way around this is to simply make use of the hot water dispensing mechanism, adding your own soup powder and voilà!

What is the price of a coffee, tea and hot water machine?

With an understanding now of everything an office coffee machine can do, you’d think you’ll end up paying and arm and a leg.

If you carefully consider your options, you can come out saving money or at worst – keeping your budget on par with current spending.

A typical office-sized bean to cup coffee machine can set you back up to R 4 000.00 per month, when about 50 people use the machine daily. (If you’re interested, check out the Jura XS9).

However, if you’re looking to cut cost and are more focused on quantity vs quality, look at installing a vending machine that can be personalised. The basic version of this (using instant coffee and powdered milk) will cost you in the region of just under R 3 000.00 per month. Like that idea? You can check out the Aqua Instant Vending solution here, too.

At the end of the day, it’s about what is important to you. If your solution is working (even if you think it’s not) – always research with facts. Have your monthly usage figured out as best you can, and work from there. A new solution will likely save you money, but be sure first.

Jura Range Reviews: Jura F Range Review

Jura Range Reviews: Jura F Range Review

The Jura F Range of coffee machines are best suited to two main schools of users: the small office which appreciates great quality coffee, and the high-usage home user who has sought a marriage of aesthetic and quality and high-end output.

Whichever of these categories you fall into, you’ll still want to peruse all your options within this specific range; knowing key differences in each of the machines may be a factor you’ve unintentionally overlooked, so pull up closer and let’s figure this out together!

Jura F Range: The Jura F7

Jura F7

Jura F7

Entry level Jura machine in the F range.

Two-touch machine.

No LCD screen – basic graphic display.

Pricing: R 11,900.00 (excluding VAT)

Drink options: Ristretto, Espresso, Coffee, Cappuccino and Latte

Grinder Type: Aroma+ grinder

Milk frother: Jura Fine Foam Technology

Water tank capacity – 1.9 L

Capacity per bean container – 310 g

The F7 replaced the Jura F50 classic which was the number one selling Jura machine of all time.

The F7 improves on the F50 by bringing the milk frothing spout closer to the centre so that one can make a cappuccino or latte without moving ones cup. The F7 however is still not a one touch cappuccino machine as it only features a single thermoblock and the milk froth is controlled by the tap system.

Jura F Range: The Jura F8

Jura F8

Jura F8

Two-touch machine.

LCD screen display with easy to use rotary dial, to make drink selection a breeze.

Pricing: R12,900.00 (excluding VAT)

Drink options: Latte Macchiato, Cappuccino, Espresso Macchiato, Coffee, Espresso, Ristretto, Special Coffee, Milk foam, Hot Water.

Grinder Type: Aroma+ grinder

Milk frother: Fine Foam Frother

Water tank capacity – 1.9 L

Capacity per bean container – 310 g

While the F8 is a major aesthetic improvement on the F7, it still remains a two-touch coffee machine and maintains similar outputs with similar Key Technologies – like the Aroma+ grinder and Fine Foam technology. The capacity of the water tank, as well as the bean hopper are exactly the same.

Jura F Range: The Jura F9

Jura F9

Jura F9

The Jura F9 is the top of the range small office one touch coffee machine in the Jura stable. The F9 also has slightly different styling compared to the other two F models with the milk based drinks as well as the espresso drinks being made all in the central position.

This machine is the first of the F Range to feature One-Touch functionality.

TFT colour screen display with rotary dial, for ease of use on drink selections.

Pricing: R 15 600.00 (excluding VAT)

Drink options: Flat White, Caffè Latte, Latte Macchiato, Cappuccino, Espresso Macchiato, Special Coffee, Regular Coffee, Espresso, Ristretto, Milk Foam and Hot Water.

Grinder type: Aroma+ grinder

Milk frother: Fine Foam technology

Water tank capacity: 1.9 L

Capacity per bean container – 310 g

While the entire F-range carries the same size water tank and bean hopper, and employs the same Jura Key Technologies, we can see the vast difference in their output capabilities. The pricing range is also quite narrow.

Jura F Range Overview: Jura F7 vs Jura F8 vs Jura F9 – which machine will suit your needs?

It comes down to functionality and output, when we pit the F range against one another.

If considering the impact of one-touch vs two-touch functionality, know that the F7 and the F8 will require you to move your cup from the coffee dispensing spout, over to the milk spout when preparing milk-based drinks. The F9 is the only machine within this range that can have coffee and milk dispensed from a single area.

That being said, the quality of the milk froth you’ll obtain from all three of these machines is exactly the same. While the Professional Fine Foam frother may be compatible, the standard Fine Foam Technology is employed throughout the F range.

Another dramatic difference between machines is the drink option availability. We see incremental improvements from the F7 to the F8, but the F9 blows us away with it’s ability to produce each and every possible concoction of speciality coffee rinks.

In terms of aesthetic, the F7, F8 and F9 (in my opinion, at least) each score higher than their predecessor.

The F7 is basic display, almost barely functional, while the F8 improves slightly, and the F9 blowing it out of the water with finishings and one-touch functionality.

Lastly, onto pricing. With less than a R 4 000.00 difference between entry-level and high-end of the F range, you’d be hard pressed to consider how much of an influence your budget is when buying these Jura Coffee Machines.

Whichever you decide on, you’re in for some great tasting coffee!

Juicy Java – Top Filter Coffee Makers in USA

If you’re anything like me, a point-form list that takes away the need to research any given topic by myself is your idea of a good life. Need to know the best rates you can get for an apartment? “Top Ten Affordable Apartments in New York” (insert the giggle here).

“How To Get 8 Hours Sleep In 4 Hours”. Lists are everywhere – and for a good reason. Comparing, researching and finding out all you can before committing to anything nowadays is almost standard practice. So, if you’re in the market for a drip coffee maker, here’s a list to help you with that.

Do note that we have featured these machines according to pricing – from an entry level machine all the way though to “top-of-the-range” coffee makers.

Also, we know you’re in South Africa – so if our own local range of filter coffee makers is just not meeting your standards, consider getting local friend to accept your Amazon delivery and let the Java flow!

Best Affordable Filter Coffee Makers USA

You need something that’s going to make you great coffee, but you don’t want to spend a fortune on it.

The Bunn Velocity Brew BT – $ 120.00 – $ 180.00

the-bunn-velocity-brew-bt

  • In the review by cnet.com, we’re told this drip coffee maker is capable of brewing a pot of coffee in about 3 minutes. It contains a thermo-flask to keep that coffee hot, but meets it’s downfall in that it only has capacity to brew one pot per time.

KitchenAid Siphon Brewer – $ 150.00 – $ 200.00

kitchenaid-siphon-brewer

  • This piece demonstrates there is space for a hybrid of both trusted types of machines and more “artsy” machine styles. The KitchenAid Siphon brewer combines the syphon-style top of coffee makers, coupled with the drip-coffee maker style pot we have come to know. This review, from cnet.com, we’re told that this coffee maker produces typically “cloudy” coffee, and because of the method of extraction, often yields a far stronger cup than the rest of the coffee maker styles.

Ninja Coffee Bar – $ 145.00 – $ 175.00

  • We can see where this machine derived it’s name from; it’s sleek, and quiet – just like a ninja (well, the good one’s anyway). This machine features selection buttons, which allow you to choose which coffee strength you prefer, as well as speciality brews set to your unique taste. Also, it features a removable water tank, which is something we rarely ever see on drip coffee makers. Check out the full review on cnet.com

  • This top of the rage drip coffee maker has deceiving looks; it appears almost “old fashioned” in styling, while at the simultaneously “ahead of it’s time”. If you’re a lover of piping hot coffee, look no further, The tower has a capacity to heat the water reservoir to 200 degree, ensuring it’s as hot as can be. You’re ensured q quick cup too, as brewing a whole pot takes as little as 6 minutes. Want to see the full review? Check it out on cnet.com.

Why Your Facilities Management Should Choose A Coffee Solution for Your Office

The official definition of facilities management is “the maintenance of an organization’s buildings and equipment.”. I’m sure you could ask any facilities manager, and they would agree, that the role itself is far more encompassing than that.

It not only involves making sure the day to day running of almost all office-related equipment is maintained and in good working order, but also to make sure the staff are happy in using said machinery.

So, why would a coffee machine solution even appear on their list, let alone as an item of priority? Here are a few good reasons all facilities managers should look into investing in a coffee solution to ensure a happy office.

Coffee Solutions – Pro’s and Con’s

pro and con

There are two main schools of approach in terms of hot beverage provision for an office: self-serve or a tea lady. Self serve has, over the years, proven to be a costly exercise for any company in excess of (at most) 10 employees. Any more than that amount means either providing a stipend for daily coffee spends, providing un-monitored coffee product distribution and availability, as well as running the risk of abuse of free product and gasp theft!

The other option, of employing a tea lady full time to provide coffee to employees has two major downfalls: firstly, you’re paying an entire salary for a person to make coffee, and secondly, said employee might very well not make the drinks your employees really want, or make it the way the employee enjoys it. You (unfortunately, but realistically) run the risk of theft, as well.

A coffee machine solution allows you the freedom to plug-and-play the solution, for a set fee each month, and also eliminating the following problems:

Eliminates theft by locking away all the product inside the machine.

Eliminates product abuse by only dispensing a set amount of product per cup.

Eliminates grumpy employees two fold – firstly by allowing them to choose their own favourite, just the way they like it, and secondly by not having to let each employee wait their turn for the tea lady to come around with her outdated trolley to provide them a drink.

So, what are the downfalls?

Your machine will undoubtedly require same level of maintenance. In a situation like this, we have eluded to the benefits of a coffee vending  solution. These types of machines will cut your monthly spend, especially in the instance of fresh milk, but with that advantage of a reduced coffee bill, you must remember that using powdered milk will require some routine leaning of the machine. So, don’t get rid of your lovely tea lady just yet. Rather have her assist in cleaning the machine (hourly, by rinsing the machine, daily – by removing the canisters and giving them a good wash, and monthly for a deep clean).

Product refills and replacement is also a factor, so she could also assist with that.

What Is an Office Coffee Solution?

what

An office coffee solution is when a service provider installs a coffee machine (this can be anything from a coffee vending machine, to a fresh milk bean-to-cup solution), and provides three major supporting elements:

They will provide coffee product suitable for the coffee machine of your choice.

They further provide backup support for troubleshooting any problems that may arise during your contract period with them.

Lastly, and sometimes most importantly, they should provide the option to upgrade or downgrade a machine which no longer meets your changing needs, as well as swap out and replace a machine that may be faulty and cannot be fixed on site.

It’s really important you try top find the shortest term contract that encompasses all of these benefits, as office machine – while exceptionally reliable – are going to require some good old TLC now and then.

How Much Does a Coffee Solution Cost?

how much

There is no black and white in terms of what you should be paying for a coffee solution, and this ties back in with your coffee solution service provider. They should allow you to “test out” the machine, for at least a week, for you to get a feel for how staff take to it, as well as how much product you will consume monthly.

From this, you can safely determine how much product you will use, and they type of machine you require.

The coffee solution service provider should then be transparent enough to advise you – the customer – a to what will suit YOUR needs the best, and you’ll take it from there.

Make sure you’re not locked into a three or five year contract – especially as a first time user – as this may cause unnecessary problems and having to pay exorbitant fees in order to release yourself from that binding contract.

For more info on a coffee solution that will fit your needs (and also ticks all the boxes we’ve listed above) – fill out the form below for a friendly consultant to be in contact with you.

When Is The Wrong Time To Buy a Coffee Machine?

In this age of instant sales and instant gratification, we’re so used to be told “Yes, now IS the right time!”, or “if not now, when”. You get the idea.

Other than those who are lucky enough to have previous experience, or someone who is experienced guiding us through the motions of the when, the where and the how, sometimes we can be led down a rabbit hole and end up far worse off than ever before.

We’re here to tell you some cases in which you really shouldn’t invest in a coffee machine:

Don’t Invest in a Coffee Machine if you’ve Just Opened a Business

If you’re the proud owner of a newly opened business, well done! It take a lot of work, guts and determination to do that. You might be cautiously optimistic, or going full steam ahead with a feather in your cap. If you fall into the latter category, apply the brakes right now. A brand new business has a lot of growing and adapting to do – no matter how well-planned your mission statement is. You might expand, you might remain the same size team, or even downsize- especially in the first year or two. If you absolutely have to have a coffee machine, opt for the smallest type you can find, or try find the shortest rental term you can.

If you do opt for a short rental term, make sure you’re not locking yourself into anything longer than one year, with the option to cancel said contract with a minimal cancellation fee.

The last thing any new business owner needs is stress over a fancy kitchen appliance.

Don’t Buy a Coffee machine if you haven’t Explored Your Options

You THINK 100% of your staff will love you until the end of time if you get a vending machine that makes hot chocolate. Two weeks in, they’re giving you the stink-eye on the hallway, because the machine sucks and it makes terrible, terrible coffee. You’ve made 10% of your staff happy 90% of the time, but the other 90% who enjoy a decent cup of coffee are unhappy 90% of the time.

Trial periods are there for this exact reason. There Is simply no other way of gauging staff response to a machine, other than literally installing it, and letting them try it out.

You might find that people are hardly even drinking the coffee, which means money wasted and a very unhappy boss.

Try before you buy!

Don’t Buy a Coffee Machine If You Already Have One

This should go without saying, but if you’ve been unfortunate in that you’ve locked yourself into a three year contract with a machine you absolutely hate, getting another one that you think you might love is NOT going to solve any of your problems.

Try to negotiate with the contract holder, to see if a penalty is applicable to get you out of that contract. If they won’t budge, try negotiate a machine swap-out, to something more preferable for you.

Otherwise, try to make the best of it. For instance, if you’ve signed up for a bean to cup machine that your staff abhor, try to offer a can of hot chocolate powder on the side; it won’t fix the problem, but it will sweeten the deal while you ride out the remainder of your contract.

However, it’s never going to work out if you are paying for a machine that’s just sitting, there, and you rush into the buying or renting of another – and sit with (perhaps) the exact same problem.

Don’t Buy a Coffee Machine If You Are Locked into a Long Term Contract

It might seem appealing to “know you’re safe and will be paying the same price for the next three years”, but the longer your rental contract is, the more variables that could go wrong.

Sure, a long contract with options to swap out (upgrade or downgrade), the promise of support and maintenance are fair and well. B

But what if your needs and circumstances change? Your company may grow, it might downscale, it might relocate to an area your service provider does not cover. Too many area’s for things to go wrong.

Rather opt for a one-year maximum contract period, for your own safety and sanity.

Don’t Buy a Coffee Machine if you don’t Absolutely Love It

Why would you buy a car you absolutely hate? Same goes for a coffee machine. Yes, finding a machine that’s going to “tick ALL the boxes” is near impossible, but keep looking around if you aren’t entirely satisfied.

Consider the machine’s location, it’s purpose and price. Once these three factors are covered, you should have a much clearer picture of the type of machine you want

Jura vs WMF – Swiss Engineering vs German Precision

Ooooh, I can feel I’m already stepping on some loyalist’s toes here. Will that make me tread lightly? Of course not!

Jura and WMF are arguably some the THE biggest names in terms of automatic coffee machines- worldwide – and for some darn good reason.

Jura Overview

Jura is known for their Swiss Engineering and continuous improvements – whether it be the implementation of the Aroma G3 Grinder, or P.E.P technology. These small changes make the world of difference to coffee lovers – and connoisseurs alike.

There really isn’t much that can add up the quality of coffee you can get from a Jura. Add to that their also continually-improved milk frothing technology, and you’ve got yourself an all-round coffee station that everyone is going to love.

Jura generally caters for anyone from a home environment where large volumes of coffee are consumed daily, all the way through to offices of up to 100 (in the X-Range of machines) and even offices of up to 200 daily drinkers (from their GIGA range).

Price-wise, Jura is not cheap – but it is also not overpriced, either. You want quality, you get quality – and a name you can trust.

WMF Overview

While WMF is not as widely known as Jura, their brand and associations thereof are quite impressive. The proudly German brand offers quite a broad selection of “wow” machines.

Not only does WMF offer some of the most forward-thinking milk technology, it goes beyond that. For the first time, you can make milk in either hot or cold temperatures, in any consistency – ranging from lightly frothed, full foam or to such a dense consistency that it will remain inside your glass when tipped over!

WMF is geared towards the big, big office environment; I’m talking in excess of 200 people using the machine daily. Their range offers some seriously huge machines- but my reason for suggesting placement in a large office environment is two-fold. These machines are very, very expensive. Their entry-level ranges are priced from about R 70 000.00.

See, WMF picks up where Jura leaves off basically.

Undoubtedly, both of these machines and brands are worth their weight in gold – but it really depends on the environment you’ll be placing them in, as well as the popularity of the drinks they have to offer (and how many of each will be consumed each day).

Jura Advantages and Features

  • P.E.P – Pulse Extraction Process ensures your coffee flavour is extracted optimally; no more over or under extraction – basically, a perfect cup each and every time!
  • JURA App – compatible Jura models allow you to make, store and re-create your favourite drinks at the touch of a button.
  • Aroma G3 Grinder – guarantees you the freshest, most well-ground coffee you can imagine.
  • Pricing – well-priced, considering the brand value.
  • Touch screen models with backlights, monitored drip trays and bean hopper extensions.
  • Professional Fine Foam frother allows for milk in three ways; heated, frothed and foamed milk.

WMF Advantages and Features

  • Hot chocolate; this is one of the first brand ranges of coffee machine to offer hot chocolate functionality. 99% of bean to cup coffee machine are restricted to coffee, and milk-based coffee drinks. WMF is a game changer in this regards, second only to (perhaps) Franke.
  • WMF Dynamic Milk. Just wow. Make your milk hot, cold, watery, frothy, foamy, or so dense it looks like cream.
  • Two milk drinks at once. Not many machines offer this – but WMF does.

Jura vs WMF – Who Wins?

The winner depends on YOUR needs; consider these 5 factors, and the decision will surely make itself:

  • Price
  • Milk-based drinks
  • Office size
  • Hot chocolate functionality
  • Coffee quality

Nespresso Pixie Review – Compact Coffee

The Nespresso Pixie is the household accessory anyone who has ever watched TV, or enjoyed good coffee – will want in their homes.

It’s everywhere you look – on shelves, in adverts, online stores abound. And for good reason; the Nespresso Pixie is one of the most easily accessible, and most reliable little capsule coffee machines on the market.

As all is fair in love and war – we’re going to play both sides of the fence today and do a review of the pixie – including every advantage and disadvantage you could imagine.

Nespresso Pixie Overview

The Nespresso Pixie can be bough at any major outlet; think Game, Makro, Dion Wired, Boardmans and @home.

You can easily pop this little machine into your basket, where it will slot neatly between new bedding and fluffy pillows. It should fit just as nicely into your budget, setting you back roughly in the median of R 2000.00.

The one very appealing feature of the pixie model is the interchangeable side panel; you can literally choose any colour that fits into your décor! No more coffee machines that stick out like sore thumbs against a fuchsia splash-back!

Nepresso Pixie Advantages

  • nespresso pixie side panels

    • Machine has interchangeable side panels, in a variety of colours
    • Capsules available in a large variety of flavours AND strengths
    • Capsules available in decaf option – in three strength variants too!
    • Machine is relatively quiet (when compared to noise levels made by bean-to-cup coffee machines)
    • Hardly requires maintenance; the machine will only require a de-scale if you are using “impure water” – and that usually only happens annually.
    • The machine can be configured to fill any cup size, and as as accommodate said cup with a removable drip tray.
    • Nespresso offers “Recycling Bags”, into which you can dump your used capsules. Return that packet to any Nespresso boutique and they’ll make sure your pods don’t end up in a never-ending landfill.

Nespresso Pixie Disadvantages

nespresso capsules online

  • This machine sounds pretty awesome, but every single machine – new or old – will have some downfalls.
  • The Pixie can only make coffee-based drinks; if you love cappuccino’s- you simply won’t get one from this machine.
  • The capsules are expensive; prices averaging R 80.00 – R 100.00 (per pack of ten) can quickly add up, month-on-month.
  • You can only purchase your capsules from Nespresso boutiques. While the machine is available at major retailers, you will be handed a voucher to buy your capsules at a boutique. That being said, each boutique has a “taste-testing” station – so you can sample before buying a whole box.
  • Your minimum order for online purchase to qualify for free delivery is R 1000.00

In Summary

The Nespresso Pixie is a hard-working home companion, which will provide you with great tasting coffee drinks all year round.

Yes, the cost is relative to quality – so you’ll get what you’re paying for. Kudos to Nespresso for considering he environmental impact – so if you buy one – pleases make sure you use their recycling service!

If you like it plain, simple, high-quality and easy – then really, the question is – ‘what else”?

Jura: GIGA 3 vs GIGA 5 vs GIGA X7 vs GIGA 8

To be sure, every one of the GIGA range is only suited to offices in excess of at least 100 cups required for preparation each day. This machine is costly, and the running thereof is going to require daily input.

But, which of these four beasts should you choose?
Consider the options below, as that is where their differences lie:

Drink Options

We can see that some machines offer pots of coffee capacity, others offer hot water dispensing, others offer milk foam and milk speciality drinks, while others can prepare two milk-based rinks at once.

Consider if this factor is important to you, and which of the machine hold the feature you most want.

Capacity

Things like water tank size, bean hopper size as well as the drudge drawer (the area in which your used coffee grounds are dumped) are quite important. Your water tank will require refilling, so the bigger the better. The bean container should be proportional to the size of your water tank, so you can get as much coffee out with the water and beans available.

Features

If a speedy preparation is important to you, consider dispensing times.

If output (related to capacity) is important, opt for larger.

In short – look over the features of each GIGA machine and decide whi9ch fits and satisfies your needs, any other deciding factor is just not going to cut it!

Philips Espresso 4000 Review: Life Just Got More Delicious

The Saeco Minuto, manufactured and distributed by Philips in South Africa, has recently made waves for bringing affordable and easy to make fresh bean and fresh milk coffee and coffee drinks in our homes.

One of the first machines sizeable enough to satisfy a small office, yet small enough to fit comfortably into a modern kitchen – Philips has done some improving, some tweaking and advancing – and have the new Espresso 4000 Range as their latest offering.

Philips Espresso 4000 Overview

The first and (in my opinion) most noticeable and forward-thinking change in the Espresso 4000 – when compared to the Minuto – is the variable brewing pressure arm.

This arm or lever (known officially as the CoffeeSwitch Lever) is located on the centre spout piece, and can either be locked into the “upward” position to brew at a lower pressure, to produce exceptional milk-based drinks, regular coffee’s and may also be used when the user wants a less-rich coffee taste.

Flipping this switch into the “downward” position allows for a higher brewing pressure, which would be used by those who enjoy their Espresso’s and also a stronger coffee.

You can still expect the wide variety of drinks as offered on the earlier models – which include Espresso, Espresso Lungo, Classic Coffee, Cappuccino as well as frothed milk.

The machine display has remained entirely similar – with chrome finished buttons for each of the six menu buttons – four of which are pre-set for drink selections and two remain reserved for machine settings (including coffee strength, temperature, volume and other main settings.)

The standard ceramic grinder keeps the threat of worn-out grinders at bay, and the coarseness of your coffee can be adjusted within the 5 grind levels. Yep, that means pretty much anyone who enjoys coffee can find their perfect balance for their palette. Keeping on that note – the Espresso 4000 offers a memory function – so you can choose to dispense however little or much coffee as you wish.

One more new feature is the height-adjustable spout – meaning you can now fit your latte glass comfortably under the spout without sacrificing coffee volume whatsoever.

Philips Espresso 4000 Pro’s and Con’s

Some of the advantages have already been mentioned in our overview – but for a quick recap:

  • CoffeeSwitch Lever – allows for variable brewing pressure
  • Height-adjustable milk spout
  • Easy to use and modern user interface
  • Variable heat settings
  • Memory function
  • Fresh beans ground with bluntness-banishing ceramic grinder
  • Removable milk carafe for easy storage

There will always be some downfalls – so here goes:

  • Removable brew group, which proved to be a bit of a niggle in the Minuto range – has remained. This means regular removal of the brew group to clean it out, and replacement of the brew group take a bit of getting used to.
  • Limited to milk froth; maybe we’re a little spoiled , but with brands like Jura offering the Professional Fine Foam frother means we are somewhat used to being able to switch between frothed milk or micro-foam. The Espresso 4000 is only capable of making frothed milk – not a bad thing at all though – especially if you like heavier milk-based drinks.

Philips Espresso 4000 Specifications

  • 1.8 litre water tank
  • 250g Bean Hopper
  • Drudge drawer (for used coffee grounds) can hold up to 15 “pucks” – i.e. – only need to clean out the machine after every 15 cups made.
  • Height 330mm
  • Depth 429mm
  • Width 215mm

Philips Espresso 4000 Price

You an expect to pay in the region of R 9000.00 for this little beast.

Renting vs Buying A Coffee Machine for a Coffee Shop: The Pro’s and Con’s Explained

Renting vs Buying A Coffee Machine for a Coffee Shop: The Pro’s and Con’s Explained

Coffee shops and café’s are popping up everywhere, from side-walks to shopping centres, within beauty salons and even retail stores. It’s plain to see people not only want their coffee – they NEED it, and they need it to be easily accessible.

Now most major coffee chains (with the likes of Mugg & Bean, Starbucks etc.) are bound by the chain to make use of a specific type of coffee machine; this is great – as the chain itself foots the bill for the purchase of the machine, they pay for the repairs and maintenance and they well-trained staff permanently manning the machines. Most of these machine types are manual – i.e. – coffee is ground separately, extracted with a certain level of skill and the milk is frothed separately and by hand of the operator.

But what if you’re a small or medium sized coffee shop, who does not employ specific people to man the stations and operate those machines continually? What if, for example, you’re a group of 5 colleagues – prepping food, manning reception, serving and also making the coffee? You’re going to need to consider an automatic coffee machine that does all the work for you.

The answer seems simple enough – you’ve solved the dilemma of needing an extra set of salaried hands to work your coffee machine. But now the next question – almost equal in importance – is “do I rent or do I buy the machine”?

Buying a Coffee Machine for a Coffee Shop

You’ve likely already laid out quite a large sum of money getting your shop fitted, kitted and decked out. You’re paying new staff, your overheads are still undetermined and you likely also don’t have a wad of endless cash laying around to play with. That being said – the chances you have R 40 000.00 – R 70 000.00 sitting waiting to be spent on buying a coffee machine are slim.

If you do – will you have the capital at hand to service that machine, to maintain it – and to risk the possibility of losing business if (or when) your machine goes on the fritz – and you have no choice but to sit without it for sometimes up to a week while the manufacturer has it returned to their workshop to be repaired?

You probably answered no to a lot of those questions.

The last thing we even consider is if that machine is going to serve your needs for as long as you have clientèle. What I mean by this is that say for instance you purchase a medium-sized coffee machine. It works excellently for about 6 months. All of a sudden, someone reviews your coffee shop – and your foot traffic doubles, triples – or even quadruples. You now have queues forming out your door and that poor little coffee machine – thinking it “was the tank who could” – is straining, almost crying out trying to keep up with your daily cup count. What then? Do you buy another? That’s a lot of time and money to invest in a coffee machine – and a lot of stress and “what if’s” to carry around.

However, if you do have the capital to purchase a machine and are guaranteed servicing and support – grab it with both hands.

Renting a Coffee Machine for a Coffee Shop

Renting a coffee machine is sometimes the wiser option when you’re opening a café or a coffee shop. Working off the matters we discussed above, let’s look at the flip side of each situation:

Money money money. Renting means you’re going to be paying a set amount each month – no initial upfront lump sum payment at all. This allows your cash-flow the ease of comfort to use some – but not all of it in one go. Finding a machine in your price range that suits your current needs is actually really easy – provided you put some effort into your research.

Renting a machine also comes with a lot of value added features. These usually include a service and maintenance plan – so if that machine decides to go on strike on day and stop working – you’ll have a technician dispatched to solve the issue. If it still won’t cooperate after that – the company you’re renting from should send you a replacement machine, too. This means no downtime – no angry customers, no loss of income for the day.

Changing needs are a reality – so when your coffee shops becomes the Justin Bieber of caffeine-producing liquid happiness – and your foot traffic increases – you have options! Either upgrade your machine for a bigger one – one that is more capable of handling more cups per day, even two cups at a time. If that option doesn’t tickle your fancy, you could add another machine to your existing account – winner winner chicken dinner!

Or, you could do the opposite – if you downscale your shop – you can downscale your machine.

In conclusion – if you’re a small business starting up – rather consider renting a coffee machine than buying one. It will be far less of a financial strain and risk – just make sure you DO have the capital to cover the monthly rentals on whichever machine you choose 🙂

Schaerer Coffee Club – Operating

The Coffee Club user interface relies on easy, fun operation. By swiping vertically over the screen, you can access all the stored coffee specialities directly with one swipe. Once the beverage has been selected, an animated

display shows the current status of the preparation process.

Everyone using the coffee machine can customise the beverage size, flavour intensity, milk and milk foam quantity with just a few simple touches on the TouchIT display, thereby creating their – or their guest’s – own favourite coffee. You can even operate the machine directly from your smartphone with our coffeeMYsation app. Simply create your favourite coffee in the app and start the preparation process directly from there. And remember to save the recipe so that it tastes just as good the next time.

Cleaning and Maintenance of the Schaerer Coffee Club

The new cleaning concept of the Coffee Club significantly reduces the time needed for cleaning. To conform to the HACCP hygiene analysis, the system cleaning process need only be carried out once per week. The daily switch-off rinsing process also includes the innovative CleanIT function: Connect the milk system to the steam valve, start the programme, finished.

Instant vs Filter Coffee – The Why, The When and The How

Instant vs Filter Coffee – The Why, The When and The How

I can already feel I’ve rubbed some readers up the wrong way, but hear me out. Coffee is an acquired taste, and even thought the popularity of this drink has grown exponentially over the past decade, there are still more personal tastes to the drink than you could imagine.

Coffee purists (sometimes also known as coffee snobs) are always going to hold their personal taste in the highest regard. They like their coffee pure, piping hot and unadulterated with sugar and milk. They appreciate the complexity of the flavours each type of coffee bean and blend can produce.

Then we have the “new age” coffee drinkers – those who have a Keurig or Nespresso neatly placed in a pride position in their modern and self-automated kitchens (not taking a dig at you, kind jealous here actually). They enjoy the freedom of single-serve machines, which they can choose to drink for each time. It’s a relatively cheap way to get your fix, and it looks really cool.

Then we have the yuppies – the guys who stand in line at Starbucks every single morning, without fail, to get their misspelled name printed on a cup of the fanciest, most sugar-crammed coffee drink you could imagine. The reason I say coffee drink is that unless you’;re ordering a conventional coffee, a cappuccino or maybe even a latte – the amount of actual coffee added to your drink is far outweighed by the other flavours and additives. That being said – it suits the palette’s of those who don’t really enjoy coffee – but prefer a nicely flavoured warm drink – a perfect solution in the morning.

We also have some other uncategorised types of coffee drinkers; those who enjoy instant coffee (likely people who also don’t enjoy a strong coffee flavour, but still want a pick-me-up).

We then have filter coffee drinkers, who love the flavour and aroma of coffee without the frills and fuss – but with a bit less of a kick than a Ristretto or an espresso.

We’re going to chat about these last two groups of people – and why they choose what they choose as their drink of choice.

Instant Coffee Drinkers

instant

Instant coffee, at it’s root, is pre-ground coffee beans that have been made into a coffee solution, and then undergo either a drying or a chemical process to remove the water and further dry up the coffee itself into granulated pieces.

Now, instant coffee is well priced and suits the tastes of the majority of people. Which is likely the reason it has succeeded so well this far. Think back to adverts of instant coffee – like Maxwell House coffee. Nowadays, you can buy instant coffee in a variety of pre-flavoured types, some ranges are available in decaf, others with a stronger or weaker aroma – and others even come with pre-mixed coffee creamer – eliminating the need to buy that as an added extra.

Instant coffee is also a good solution to those who enjoy coffee – but have pre-disposed risks that would be drastically worsened if they were to drink pure coffee. Think of hypertension, heart problems, lactose intolerance (exacerbated by drinking “proper” coffee drinks as caffeine stimulates the bowels, as does milk in cappuccino’s and latte’s).

Filter Coffee Drinkers

filter

Filter Coffee has been around for about as long as instant coffee has – probably even a little longer. Filter coffee is the most basic of the “fresh” coffee drinks; it makes use of coffee beans which have been ground up into a certain consistency – either on the spot or bought pre-packaged.

These grounds are added to a paper filter, and piping hot water is allowed to seep through the coffee and filter and allow for a gravitationally-influenced extraction of plain, pure coffee.

While the taste is also acquired – it can be altered in two main ways.
The first way is to adjust your coffee grounds size – either by making the grinds bigger or coarser – to allow for a less bitter extraction of coffee.

Using smaller grounds allows the coffee to be in contact with the hot water for longer, and more surface are is exposed – meaning a stronger and possibly more bitter coffee extraction.

Secondly, you can alter the flavour by adding sugar, milk and flavoured syrups to your coffee.

Why do so many people enjoy filter coffee so much, though? Well, it tastes a lot different – almost more “authentic” than filter coffee – because it is worlds apart in terms of freshness. Brewing a pot of filter coffee takes as little as 5 minutes – and you’re left with a pot catering for up to 12 cups before needing to brew a fresh pot.

Just ask Dave Grohl how he likes his coffee!

So, if you’re still undecided how you like your coffee, I would suggest comparing instant coffee and filter coffee side-by-side as a starting point. From there, you can ascertain of you prefer a stronger taste, a weaker taste, creamier, sweeter, more bitter – of if you don’t really even like coffee at all. (That won’t happen, don’t you worry!)

Happy sipping!

Jura Z7 vs Jura XS9 – Oldies But Goodies

Jura Z7 vs Jura XS9 – Oldies But Goodies

There are some models in any range of appliances that will stand out and become known as the “flagship” models of the brands – the tried, tested and trusted. The Jura XS9 has become one of such models in the Jura coffee machine range – for good cause, of course.

The XS9 is a beast of a machine; a huge water tank, a big bean hopper, the ability to make two drinks at once – and of course the ability for it to fit both the Fine Foam and Professional Fine Foam Frother – meaning you can make a dense-foam cappuccino as well as a light and fluffy latte.

But the XS9 is not the only workhorse of the Jura range; we’re going to take a look at the Jura Z7, compared side by side to the Jura XS9.

Jura Z7

Jura Z7

  • Voltage 220 – 240 alternating current
  • Current 10 amp
  • Voltage / Frequency 50 hz
  • Holding capacity of water tank 5.7 L
  • Coffee grounds container (servings) 40
  • Holding capacity of bean container with aroma preservation cover 260 g
  • Bean container can be optionally extended to 730 g
  • Weight 13.8 kg

  • Drink Selections: Latte Macchiato, Cappuccino, Coffee, Espresso, Milk (frothed or foamed depending on frother type), Hot Water
  • Plain text graphic display
  • Frother type: Fits both the Fine Foam Frother and Professional Fine Foam Frother
  • Jura XS9 Pricing: +/- R 28 000.00 (ex VAT)
  • One-touch cappuccino machine – no need to move your cup across from the milk to the coffee dispensing spout.
  • Hard-button selection for each type of drink

In conclusion – which is the better choice between the Jura XS9 and the Jura Z7?

The Jura Z7 was, for quite some time, the largest of the available Jura ranges. The XS9 bumped it out of first place, increasing their standing record for water tank size from 2.8 litres all the way up to 5.7litres. The bean container stayed in the same region – however, the XS9 allows for the addition of a bean hopper extension for up to a capacity of 730g.

Both machines have a basic graphic screen display, and a relatively easy to use layout. Each drink is denoted by a button, both machine are compatible with various frother types and lastly – both (unfortunately) make use of some rather dated Jura technology – with the likes of the Aroma+ Grinder (as opposed to the latest Aroma G3 Grinder) – as well as using I.P.B.W.S. (Intelligent Pre-Brew Water System) as opposed to the more modern P.E.P (Pulse Extraction Process).

Nonetheless, both of these machine will service a large office space that doesn’t place too much emphasis on aesthetic – but rather on output.

Now, choosing between the two is entirely based on three things; firstly – your personal preference., Se3condly, the aesthetic is drastically different between these two machines, and lastly, the pricing difference (if it is a factor to you).

Either way, you’ll be employing a pretty decent source of good coffee and milk-based coffee drinks for your staff 🙂

The Top 10 Coffee Machines in South Africa under R 10 000.00

So, you’re also not a Rockefeller. And that’s ok. Not many people can afford a luxury item, such as a coffee machine, let alone one that costs more than R 10 000.00. That being said, once we start getting lower in price than this figure, we can expect to start seeing either a compromise in the quality of the machine, the features it holds, a decline in build quality and also less and less modern technology.

You could easily buy yourself two, three – maybe even four capsule-type coffee machines to total up to R 10 000.00, but you have then compromised on fresh beans, milk frothing – and most importantly are now bound to using a specific type of capsule for the lifetime of the coffee machine.

That’s why we’re going to focus solely on bean-to-cup coffee machine for less than R 10 000.00, so if you’re a coffee connoisseur on a budget – this list is for you!

Jura A1

Jura A1

The is the coffee purists dream come true; Jura has introduced the A1 model this year – the step up from it’s predecessors in the ENA range – but with significant improvements. The introduction of the Aroma G3 grinder and P.E.P technology ensure a delectable cup each time. It retails for R 9 000.00 (click here for our blog on the Jura A1)

Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

Coming in at R 5.00 under the mark, the Rancilio Siliva is a far more hands-on type of coffee machine. This Espresso machine has a Panarello-style steaming wand, and a detachable brew head. This is going to require some level of skill from the user, but if that’s what you’re looking for – this si a steal!

DeLonghi Magnifica Pronto

DeLonghi Magnifica Pronto

Sliding in at R 300.00 under our budget, the DeLonghi Magnifica Pronto offers both lovers of pure coffee, as well as those who opt for milk-based coffee rinks a perfect and modern solution. This is actually quite a stylish machine, and with a removable milk carafe – you have no more need to worry about soured milk overnight.

Check out or video review of this machine here.

Nescafe Dolce Gusto

Nescafe Dolce Gusto

If you fall in to the category of “I’ll have my Latte skinny, with caramel flavour” and not “One Ristretto, please” – consider a coffee machine of this type. The Dolce Gusto range is actually quite inclusive – for coffee lovers and those who opt for a fluffier version of the drink – and the machine as well as the capsules are readily available at retail outlets. Also, at a cost of under R 5000.00, it’s a really good starting point (or end point) for those who fit it’s ideal market.

Saeco Minuto

Saeco Minuto

No frills, no fancy bells and whistles. Customised coffee, variable grind size and special milk based coffee drink preparation? Yassss! The Saeco Minuto is a basic machine, but will slot beautifully into the home of those3 who appreciate a well-made coffee. Many reviews taste that the hottest coffee you will get from an automatic machine comes from this baby – ad they’re not wrong.

DeLonghi Intensa Automatic

DeLonghi Intensa Automatic

For R 8 000.00, you’re equipped with an automatic coffee machine that has an interactive LCD screen, a central coffee spout and milk frother (automatic). If you like a mix of aesthetics, value for money and ease of use – this might just be a great option for you. (The one year warranty will tide you over well, too).

DeLonghi Icona Pump Espresso

DeLonghi Icona Pump Espresso

If you liked the idea of the Rancilio Silivia, but still considered it a bit pricey for its output, perhaps the Icona Pump might suit you better. This machine will set you back only R 3 500.00, and offers all that the Rancilio does in a smaller version. It also has a built-in cup warmer.

Bravilor Bonamat Novo Filter Coffee Machine

Bravilor Bonamat Novo Filter Coffee Machine

You could pick up a filter coffee machine at almost any retail store for under R 500.00, but you’d be buying a household variant that offers nowhere close to what this commercial filter coffee machine can offer. The build quality is superior, and it has two self-regulated hot plates, meaning no more burnt and soured coffee. Also, with two hot plates – it means twice the coffee in the same amount of time. For R 4 500.00 this baby is all yours.

Melitta 1400W E950

Melitta 1400W E950

Write that down, it’s not an easy sequence f numbers to remember. Melitta is not as popular in South Africa as it is elsewhere, but this automatic bean to cup machine offers a sleek styling coupled with functionality. While the graphic screen display is not the best we’ve seen, the output of the machine may be similar to that which we see from the Saeco Minuto. And for less than R 5000.00, it too, is a steal.

Russell Hobbs Nero Espresso

Russell Hobbs Nero Espresso

R 2000.00. That’s it. The Russell Hobbs Nero Espresso is perfect for a young budding Barista – or a family se4tting where mom or Dad love to be hands on with their coffee making. It’s a compact solution for fresh coffee lovers. It features a Panerello-style wand, and is semi-automatic in that it still requires the skill to fill and tamp the coffee, but preparing it from there is done at the touch of a button.

Let us know if your favourite machine under R 10 000.00 didn’t make this list!

Jura Z8 Review – Seductive Specialities, Superior Quality Coffee

JURA.com opens up with an inviting sense of what we can expect from the upcoming Z8 coffee machine:

“A world first: One-touch lungo for a light, aromatic‚ long coffees

The Z8 from JURA boasts an unbeatable standard of coffee. For long coffees, the world’s first automatic speciality coffee machine for the home with one-touch lungo function uses a special preparation method to additionally combine the coffee with hot water during the extraction process, resulting in full-bodied, deliciously light specialities. “

You had our interest, JURA, and now you have our attention…

Jura Z8 – Winner of the Design Award 2017

The design of this machine is going to knock your socks off. The Z-range seems to carry a unique styling component, evident in the curvature of the front of the machine to reflect the shape of a coffee bean (in our opinion, any ways).

Further to this futuristic styling, this is possibly one of the best user interfaces Jura has boasted. The touch screen is interactive – and drink selection has never been this seductive. Choose your desired drink from the screen displaying each available option, select and adjust your strength and water volume accordingly; not by pressing buttons – oh no – that’s SO last year, but rather literally using the screen to select a higher or lower amount on the slider.

Keen to see a video outlining some of these features? Check it out here – video credit to JURA.

Jura Z8 Features

Jura Z8 features

  • P.E.P – the most recent extraction technology from Jura is still being used in the Jura Z8, ensuring that even the fussiest of coffee drinkers will be satisfied with unmatched quality of any coffee-based extraction.
  • A first from Jura – dual dispensing – is introduced in the incredible Z8. For the first time ever, we see a synchronised dispensing of coffee and milk froth from the adjustable central-spout system.
  • Each and every milk based drink is fully customisable – from water: coffee ration, to milk amount and, pause between milk and coffee (for Latte’s) as well as a fully adjustable coffee strength and coffee temperature. If you are a lover of creamy coffee drinks, you will not be disappointed – simply press and hold your on-screen drink selection to prompt the customising menu.

Jura Z8 Drink Options

The Z8 has set the bar incredibly high with their unprecedented drink selection on this gorgeous machine. Available options include:

  • Ristretto
  • Espresso
  • Coffee
  • Cafe Barista
  • Espresso Macchiato
  • Cappuccino
  • Latte Macchiato
  • Milk Portion – frothed
  • Milk Portion – hot milk
  • Caffe Latte
  • Lungo Barista
  • Flat White
  • Hot Water Poriton
  • Hot Water for Green Tea ( HELLO! This water is dispensed at a lower temperature to retain the integrity of the Green Tea).
  • Hot Water for Black Tea – dispensed at a higher temperature than that of the green tea.

And then of course you have the option to double-up on any of the coffee drinks listed above, so that the machine dispenses two of the same drinks simultaneously.

Jura Z8 – Features – from the Horses Mouth

Three new specialities at the touch of a button.

Inspired by know-how from the world’s best baristas, the Z8 turns enjoying a coffee into a long-lasting pleasure. For the caffè Barista, the lungo Barista and the pot of coffee, it uses a special preparation method to also combine the coffee with hot water during the extraction process to produce full-bodied, delicate, deliciously long specialities. “

Big screen, big scene.

With a precise, 4.3″, high-resolution touchscreen colour display, JURA is laying down a marker for coffee machine user interfaces. Just as impressive as its imposing screen is the completely new operating concept. It sets itself apart thanks to its clear layout and simplicity in keeping with the times. The touchscreen literally puts all your favourite coffees at your fingertips.”

P.E.P.® and fine foam technology for unrivalled coffee quality.

State-of-the-art Swiss technologies ensure top barista-style quality. The AromaG3 grinder is now twice as fast, yet preserves all the delicious aroma of the coffee be-ans. The Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.®) ensures the optimum extraction time by pulsing the hot water through the ground coffee at the exact frequency for the amount of water to create a short speciality, such as a ristretto or espresso. Even on-trend creations with milk and milk foam are exceptionally easy to produce by simply touching the display.”

An unprecedented range of specialities.

The Z8 makes a statement for variety and choice. 16 different specialities can be selected simply by touching the start screen, and a total of 21 beverages are available via the Rotary Selection. What’s more, there’s still plenty of scope for coming up with personalised creations and names – let coffee fire the imagination”

Troubleshooting your Jura E8: Jammed Drip Tray and Empty Grounds Error

The Jura range has recently introduced the E-range of coffee machines to it’s home and small office offerings; the E8 is one of the first of their range to be Bluetooth and JURA App compatible, and offers an impressive variety of drinks – from Ristretto’s to Latte’s.

Chances are, you’ve saved up for a while to afford to buy this machine, or you’re paying a reasonable amount each month to rent it from a supplier. So what happens if you take care of your machine, and one day come across a niggling error that just WON’T go away?!

You read this blog. Or, you watch this video.

Jura Empty Grounds Error

If you have emptied out your grounds container (located as a separate piece within your drip tray area) and upon replacing it, you’re still greeted with the “Empty Grounds” prompt, simply:

  • Remove your entire drip tray again
  • Remove the grounds container entirely
  • Replace the drip tray into the machine WITHOUT the grounds container being added
  • Allow the machine to reset
  • Before brewing your next cup, make sure you remove the drip tray again and re-add your grounds container.

Voilà!

Jura Empty Drip Tray Error

Now, if your machine is prompting you to “Empty Drip Tray”, and you’ve duly tried to do so and the problem persists, it’s for a good reason. The drip tray is fitted with a sensor, two silver looking receptors, located right at the back of the drip tray. To fix:

  • Remove the drip tray entirely.
  • Wipe down the silver sensors, blow on them to remove any lodged coffee grounds or dirt, and replace.

These sensors ensure that no coffee grounds or other debris is left behind in the machine, thus avoiding the chance of the machine becoming damaged. While it’s a great preventative fail-safe, it can cause this issue, but the fix is as easy as can be.
